Gunmen opened fire on Abdulsalam Musmari in Benghazi city, Benghazi district, libya. Musmari, a political activist and anti-Islamist lawyer, was killed in the attack. He was one the founders of the 17 February coalition. A sniper rifle was used in the attack.

Musmari was shot at around 1.45 pm as he walked home from the Abu Ghoula mosque in Benghazi’s Birkah district.

“He had a bullet directly in his heart,” spokesman for Benghazi Joint Security Forces (BJSF) Mohamed Hejazi told the Libya Herald. “This was a very accurate attack and the BJSF thinks that it could have been the work of a sniper.”

There were no witnesses to the attack.

Musmari is reported to have been a strong critic of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In 2011, he claimed to have received a death threat after criticising the role of Islamists in the NTC and the Union of Revolutionary Fighters. In an interview, he said: “Please deliver this message to those who want to kill me: ‘Let’s talk’.”

Musmari also pointed out that during the 2011 revolution Libyans opposed to Qaddafi all had the same cause . At the time he said: “We need a constitution that gives rights to all factions of society.”

No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however sources attributed the incident to the libyan branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

After the killing, there has been protests against the Muslim Brotherhood  in Benghazi Zintan, Tobruk and Zawiya.
